About Us
The Worthy Bean Co. was founded by two sisters, Iliana Brenes and Jessika Brenes, who live in South Carolina but were born in Turrialba, Costa Rica. We are proud to offer you a taste of our beloved country through our specialty coffee.
Iliana, the older sister, has always had a big heart and a passion for helping others. She is the oldest of four siblings, married, and a mom of one son. With 25 years of marketing experience and a former tour guide in Costa Rica, Iliana has owned a bakery and has been searching for her true passion in life.
Jessika, the younger sister, is a mother of three boys and a role model to all who know her. She enjoys spending time outdoors, is always cheerful, and is a true dream catcher. Together, the sisters have come together to find a way to help with the needs of their country of origin and local community. They are always looking to inspire others with their kindness and to share the gift of giving.
As we met with many coffee plantation owners, we were careful to choose a partner that prides themselves on utilizing sustainable techniques and giving great care to their beans. We wanted to ensure that our coffee not only tastes amazing but is also sourced ethically and responsibly.

Our History
Our story with coffee goes back many years ago, when we were kids running around on my grandparents’ farm, in Peralta, Turrialba, Costa Rica. The farm was a vast area full of fruit trees of many kinds, pastures, corn and bean fields, and, of course, coffee plantations. During our “summer vacation” from school my grandparents use to take us to the farm and we were able to stay there for several weeks at the time, in which we were allowed to “work” with the picking of the coffee beans.
My grandfather even bought us small “canastos” (baskets to gather the coffee) so it would be easier for us to pick each of the red, ripe berries from the plants. As you can imagine this is not by any means an easy task to accomplish. The steep terrain, insects, and challenging weather conditions made it a tough job, after all, it is the rain forest.
You might think why on earth did you like to go? We really did not work, we mainly went to eat the delicious breakfast/lunch which my grandmother used to pack for us and for all the people that picked the coffee. This continues to be today one of the best memories of our childhood with coffee.
Years have passed, and life happened, since those wonderful childhood memories, but our love for coffee has remained. As we started our personal growth journey we wanted to find a purpose that would allow us to spend more time with our families, serve and help our community, and connect with our roots in Costa Rica. We thought about what was something that our family had a meaningful connection to and realized that promoting Costa Rica’s “Grano de Oro “(golden seed/grain) could be the perfect way to achieve our goals. Coffee has been a driving force behind Costa Rica’s economic, social, and cultural growth from the very beginning.
Our journey into coffee roasting and grinding began when we were approached by a fellow “tico” (colloquial nickname for costaricans) who was selling his equipment, as he had to move back to Costa Rica. We had never roasted coffee before, but we were eager to learn. Through many trials and errors, we discovered that coffee roasting is a precise art. We have since been trained, have read extensively, and visited many coffee plantations and roasters to select the best quality beans and brew the perfect cup of coffee.
We believe that our love for coffee must go hand in hand with responsible and sustainable practices. That’s why we work closely with local farmers to ensure that our beans are grown and harvested using environmentally friendly methods. We also prioritize fair and ethical treatment of workers throughout the supply chain, from farm to cup.
